Pulzar FM
Pulzar FM has left the building

Pulzar FM in both of its incarnations was a wonderful thing, a radio station that bought together a diverse mix of music lovers and created a hub for them to express themselves, to share new and exciting tunes with one another and to accept all that cared to tune in. From the launch on August 18th 1999 through to the relaunch on full power across all of Canterbury on April 18th 2009, and then surviving through the Canterbury earthquakes and all the upheaval they caused, Pulzar FM was on-air as much as possible, playing positive music and sending out supportive vibes to the community. Unfortunately like any business, Pulzar FM had costs, and through the intensely tough economic time that Christchurch has gone through in 2011, sales never achieved what was required to keep the station on-air. So, like other stations around the country that also launched high profile broadcasting ventures as the world entered the Global Financial Crisis on 2008-2010, stations like XFM in Wellington, Big FM in Auckland and BoP FM in Tauranga, 105.7 Pulzar FM has been forced to call it a day, and sign out for now.

Petition to Save Pulzar FM

Pulzar FM has been taken off air due to being unable to pay bills as a result of the Canterbury Earthquakes in Sept 2010 and Feb 2011.

As a new business Pulzar FM was unable to obtain insurance to cover these events, and due to being unable to gain any funding from the Government (unlike most of their competition), have been left in a position where they have been unable to sell enough advertising to stay on air.
We, the undersigned, request that local and national Government find a solution to get Pulzar FM back on air, and to cover their costs in the short term to enable them to get back to breaking even...

I never listen to the radio anymore, it makes waking up alot more depressing when i have to set my radio to buzzer rather than waking up to the morning grind. I just don't want to listen to the rest of the crap that fills the airwaves.

Pulzar FM another toll of the earthquakes

105.7 Pulzar FM presented a promising alternative to the drab formula of mainstream radio, launching in April 2009 with a fresh mix of energetic music, fresh young announcer talent, local DJ’s and a true Christchurch attitude, based in the CBD and broadcasting to the city. Last Wednesday, Pulzar FM became another victim of the earthquakes, when the small local business was unable to keep up its payments to transmitter hosting company Kordia (a state owned enterprise).

Pulzar FM had done it hard, the directors paid one of the two highest fees nationwide for the frequency when it was purchased in May 2008, they then had to raise funds during the start of the GFC, culminating in the major investor they were negotiating with pulling out in the final week before signing, and then having to push back the launch date while they scrambled to raise enough funds to get to air. Launching on April 18th, 2009 with a shoestring operating and promotional budget (the station had to be live by May to comply with licensing regulations), over the next 10 months the station’s audience share grew to 2.4% of the Christchurch total radio audience, and they captured 9% of their critical 18-24 demographic, out rating 91ZM by 2.5%. Interestingly, even with the top rated Pop/Dance format radio station in Christchurch, the Pulzar FM team kept hearing from clients that account managers from the media duopoly were continually lying about the station going under; and unfortunately now, possibly for the first time in three years, this has been borne out.

Sales slowly grew and as September started the station was budgeting that by year end they would be in a sustainable position, not bad for a new business trying to find ground in the midst of a global economic crisis where marketing budgets were being slashed and advertising agencies in Auckland wouldn’t look at local stations they weren’t personally familiar with (or affiliated with the two Nationwide radio companies).
